The (Current) Limitations of AI
29th May 2023
There’s been lots of excitable and breathless discussion in recent months about the potential benefits of AI. I’ve heard that it will be used to draft claim notices, compensation events and could upend the commercial claims and legal worlds. But here’s a salutary and painful story from the US where ChatGPT was used to draft legal pleadings, only for it to be discovered that all the case law was bogus.
“Judge Castel said in an order that he had been presented with “an unprecedented circumstance,” a legal submission replete with “bogus judicial decisions, with bogus quotes and bogus internal citations.””
It’s a reminder that whilst AI is a useful tool, nothing (at the moment) can replace the hard research and in depth knowledge.
