Three Runway Operations Commence at HKIA

28th November 2024

As Hong Kong Airport celebrates the start of three runway operations today, I’ve dipped into the archives to find these rather grainy and faded shots of the very first fixed wing landing at Chek Lap Kok on 20 February 1997.

As you can see, the pollution was still a problem and the airport was a lot less built up than today. I remember it as an exciting day – up until that time the airport island had seemed huge, remote building site. But the landing served as a stark reminder of the rapidly approaching end goal.

Today, 8 years after commencement of the third runway project, another milestone is reached and in the next few months we will see further elements of the huge project gradually come on line. CDC have been assisting contractors at Hong Kong Airport since 1996 and are currently working across the 3RS project, managing contractual risk on this extremely complex endeavour.
